A mixed reception
As more storefronts open throughout the country, reactions typically include pushback from dedicated supporters of indie bookstores. From Lauren Zumbach at the Chicago Tribune,
Amazon’s August announcement about the Lakeview store spooked some Chicago independent bookstore owners, pushing nearly two dozen shops to band together as the Chicagoland Independent Bookstore Alliance.
Rather than opposing Amazon’s store openings directly, however, Chicagoland Independent Bookstore Alliance's focus is on promoting support and awareness of independent bookstores in the Chicago area community.
Amazon isn’t known for its subtlety, or for bending to the opinions of others, including small businesses.
The selection of books - chosen for ranking four stars or higher on Amazon.com - betrays the store as not just any bookstore. This feature takes the democracy out of book shopping, but you won’t hear complaints from a customer hoping to achieve the simple task of finding a good book to read.
