'90s Cable Classics Make a Come Back

Nickelodeon’s nostalgic lounge pleases the people at NYC charity event

It's Slime Time!

Children of the ‘90s will remember rushing home after school to sneak a sweet treat and catch up on the wacky misadventures of their favorite quirky characters. Programs like The Ren & Stimpy Show, Rugrats, Rocko’s Modern Life, and Hey Arnold! hold a special place in the hearts and minds of kids who grew up in a time before Angry Birds and iPads.

For the annual Design on a Dime charity event, Nickelodeon was looking to wow attendees with a design-forward space that would evoke 1990s Nickelodeon nostalgia. IDL donned slime-covered lenses to dream up and bring to life a 10' x 12' environment that oozed "high-end, low-brow". The result was a cheeky take on a typical living room setting that dazzled the inner-Tommy Pickles of the event's stylish VIPs.

Candy gloss surfaces and bright colors turned everyday furniture into a surreal vignette with sly references to fan favorite moments. Stimpy's backside decorating the wall. Deer busts dripping in slime. A retro fish tank TV set. Helga G. Pataki's beloved "Football Head" frame atop a purple credenza, which bears a striking resemblance to the blocky glasses worn by a certain redheaded toddler. These are all insider details curated to evoke the wonders of childhood.

All elements of the set up were auctioned off to benefit Housing Works’ wraparound services and supportive programs for New Yorkers living with and affected by HIV/AIDS. The display’s combination of high-end design and puckish humor created a definitive buzz around Nickelodeon, emerging as the NYC event’s social media photo opportunity-of-choice. The booth was pronounced “Best in Show” and has gained national acclaim following the event.
